It is always mystifying to me to discover "human nature within mother nature." That is exactly what I hoped to capture in the “Palm” Tree. So my question to all who view the “Palm” Tree is: What do you see?
This piece is the first of a series I’m planning to paint. I’ve always been fascinated by trees. I see them as our "guardians" because they protect and provide for humankind and keep us “rooted,” that is, in tune with the power and glory of the natural world. Capturing all the different textures within the leaves of the tree provided a new challenge for me. It was great fun creating this effect using a toothbrush to dip into the mask (a paint resistant substance) then using my thumb to spray onto the paper. While the mask was still wet I used a sharp edge to pull out and elongate the paint drops to create a leaf effect. I wanted "hard lines" for the shadowing on the branches and I love the subtle blue/purple tones.
I came upon this magnificent tree while vacationing in Maui. I must have walked past it a hundred times. Finally, while on a 6 a.m. photo shoot, I saw the "palm" of the tree reaching skyward. Some tell me that they see a woman's back with her arm stretched out in praise. Others see faces in the leaves. My hope is that all who gaze upon the “Palm” Tree, will take a moment to discover what images they see in this lovely gift of nature.
