This is one of those art pieces that everyone sees something different in the background from animals to mysterious paths.
I chose to paint this because I love birch trees, they are mystical for me and the intense yellow fall leaves were calling me to paint them.
I was trying several new ideas when I started this painting, beginning with cutting a full sheet of heavy watercolor paper in half lengthwise. There are several “sponged” glazed layers to achieve the colorful bright yellows (Indian Yellow) and oranges (Alizarin Orange) of the leaves. Adding just a touch of magenta to the bark of the trees was a brilliant suggestion by my then teacher and mentor Alice.
