I was inspired to paint these magnificent bears after learning that over the past 100 years,grizzlies have been eliminated from an incredible 98 percent of their original range in the contiguous United States. In fact, the brown grizzly is endangered and very close to becoming extinct.
My good friend Doug Kelley snapped the original photo of a grizzly mother and her cubs after a chance encounter with the bears in Alaska. Mild winters, loss of habitat, poorly regulated hunting laws and extreme lack of food sources have all contributed to grizzly bear decline.
