Having worked out at the Spokane Athletic Club for many years, my longtime friend and amateur photographer Susie had a bird’s eye view of Spokane’s stately Monroe Street Bridge on a daily basis. And as such, the bridge became the subject of many of her photographs. An admirer of her work, I asked if she would mind if I used one of her photographs of the bridge as the subject of one of my paintings. She loved the idea and the vision of “Monroe Street Bridge-Susie’s View” began to take shape in my mind.
She graciously gave me several years’ worth of photographs. I was looking for just the right one to suit my style, content requirements and color scheme. When I saw this photo, I knew immediately that it was the one I wanted to paint. I loved the brilliant sun shining through the last arch. I was especially taken with the way it illuminated the color contrasts that wash over the bridge. I was also struck by the long colorful shadows resting on the rocks.As the sun continues to rise, the beautifully reflecting yellow leaves in the foreground foreshadow the promise of a warmer, brighter day to come.
