This painting of St. Aloysius Church was inspired by a photograph taken by Spokane artist, Marie Pizelo. I was especially intrigued that Marie decided to snap the 123 year-old Catholic church from the Lake Arthur perspective as the front entrance to the grand church is the typical focal point. St. Al’s holds so many of my most cherished memories. I was baptized, received Holy Communion, confirmed and later married in the iconic Jesuit sanctuary and still attend mass there today. The sunny, lightly clouded spring day helped deepen the lovely reflections that pierce the placid lake.

Once I began painting, I realized there were several architectural components I had never noticed including the small cross over the back nave, the four white spikes on each spire and over the front columns and the tall chimney on the East side. I was delighted to learn that Lake Arthur was named for Father Arthur Dussault, a 1925 football player who attended Gonzaga Preparatory and University later becoming a Jesuit priest.
